Wimbledon 2011 Ladies’ Finals: Maria Sharapova Drops First Set To Petra Kvitova
No. 8 Petra Kvitova leads No. 5 Maria Sharapova, 6-3. It’s actually sunny at the All England Club today, which just seems cheeky after the consistent plague of rain delays that’ve dogged the fortnight. Sharapova elects to receive, a sage choice given her recent history of double-faulting her way out of easy set wins; she in fact will go on to commit four during this first set alone.
Sharapova takes the first game, but helpfully breaks her own serve in the second; Kvitova controls the third game in her own right to take a two-one lead. Two more games are traded before Kvitova blasts to a five-two lead, and surrenders one more game to the former grass champ before sealing the first set, 6-3. It’s the first set Sharapova has dropped at Wimbledon this year.
