Novak Djokovic Edges Rafael Nadal In First Set Of Wimbledon Finals

Match updates from Day 13 of the Championships, the men’s final of Wimbledon 2011, where World No. 2 Novak Djokovic is out to prove he deserves the World No. 1 ranking he’ll have on Monday.

Novak Djokovic leads Rafael Nadal, 6-4. This is not to take away from the fact that the Serb has beaten both Rafa and Roger this season when nobody else could, and done so on the great rivals’ best surfaces, but: The Swiss is on a wane. The Spaniard is injured. If there were ever a time for a third man to sidle in and take the grass court title, it’s now.

No matter the outcome of today’s match, Djokovic and Nadal’s rankings will reverse Monday morning, and from what we’ve seen so far, they might as well be tied atop the ATP standings, perhaps with a little asterisk in the shape of a shrugging chair umpire. They’re playing like they’re chopping trees, and whoever makes the first mistake too many in his own service game will drop the set.

As it happens, it’s Nadal, who commits seven unforced errors in the first set, the last with Djokovic up 40-30 at 5-4.
