Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the U.S. Open’s No. 11 seed, nearly blew a 5-1 third-set lead over Yen-Hsun Lu, but ultimately held on for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win in the first round on Tuesday. Tsonga was broken once after building his third-set lead, but easily held in his second attempt to serve out the match.

Tsonga was not spectacular, but turned in a solid performance in which he had 39 winners and seven aces. Those were offset, though, by 28 unforced errors and five double-faults.
On the women’s side, No. 4 seed Victoria Azarenka was the highest seed to move on in early results. The Belarusian easily dispatched unseeded Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-3. Azarenka played a clean match, with just 17 unforced errors and no double-faults. She was broken once, but offset that with five breaks of her own.
American Laura Davis was among the early losers on Tuesday, falling 7-6 (3), 6-3 to unseeded German Angelique Kerber.
