2011 US Open Results: Serena Williams Sails To Opening Round Victory

A year ago, Serena Williams sparked rumors after withdrawing from the American Grand Slam with an “illness.” It came just a month after Williams cut her foot in a restaurant in Munich on a piece of broken glass.

A year later, Williams had two tournament titles in her stats before stepping on the court at Flushing Meadows.

In her opening 2011 U.S. Open match, the No. 28 seed downed Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-1, 6-1. The match took 56 minutes. Williams had 22 winners, 10 unforced errors and no signs of an outlash at a line judge.

Her dramatized exit from the 2009 U.S. Open and her withdrawal from the 2010 tournament has left her in search of her first U.S. Open title in three years. The title would be her fourth from Flushing Meadows. It would be her 14th Grand Slam title.

The win means Williams has won 17 of her last 19 matches.
