Great Britain’s Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the 2011 U.S. Open, disposing of India’s Somdev Devvarman in a straight set win on Wednesday afternoon.
Andy Murray Onto 2011 U.S. Open 2nd Round With Straight Sets Win
Murray, the fourth-ranked player in the world, struggled with the former NCAA champion Devvarman in first set, winning the tiebreaker 7-5, before settling down and taking the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3.
Up next for Murray is Robin Haase, who cruised to a straight set win over Rui Machad.
Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro also advanced on Wednesday, scoring a straight set win over Filippo Volandri. Del Potro has a second-round match-up with fellow Argentine Diego Junqueira, who advanced to the second round when Slovakia’s Karol Beck retired after the first set.
On the woman’s side, 19-year-old American Christina McHale advanced to the third round in a major for the first time in her career with a straight set win over France’s Marion Bartoli, the No. 8 seed. McHale won a first-set tiebreaker 7-2 before winning the second set 6-2 in just under 50 minutes. McHale’s next match is against Russia’s Maria Kirilenko, the No. 25 seed in the tournament.
