Robin Soderling Withdraws From 2011 U.S. Open With Virus

No. 6 seed Robin Soderling withdrew from the 2011 U.S. Open with a virus. The 27-year-old Swede has been fighting a wrist injury and pulled out of the Master’s tournament in Cincinnati with throat problems. His agent, Nina Weterstrom issued this statement:

”He is feeling really bad. His stomach was hurting. He experienced head pain, and the doctor recommended to him not to play. They don’t know what kind of virus it is, but the doctor thinks it can be something related to the throat problems he had a couple of weeks ago, which made him have to withdraw from the Masters tournament in Cincinnati.

“He started feeling ill last night and still was hoping to play his match, but basically he was feeling too bad to play a five-set match in a Grand Slam tournament. He will try to get back home as soon as possible for further examinations.”

Brazilian Rogério Dutra da Silva took Soderling’s place in the tournament. Ironically, he too had to retire in the fourth set in his match against Louk Sorensen. Da Silva was up two sets to one when he retired.
