Maria Sharapova Cruises, Advances To Third Round

Third-seeded Maria Sharapova easily advanced into the third round of the 2011 U.S. Open with a 6-1, 6-1 victory Wednesday night over 84th-ranked Anastasia Yakimova.

After a slow start, Sharapova ran away with the match. She had 28 winners while her opponent had two and she won 59 points to 32. She also saved all five break points against her. Sharapova needed just 70 minutes to complete a match that started late Wednesday night on Arthur Ashe stadium court.

Sharapova was able to put her opening round match behind her. She struggled to put away Britain’s Heather Watson before advancing.

She will now meet No. 26 Flavia Pennetta in the third round. Pennetta beat Romina Oprandi 6-0, 6-3.

Sharapova is in search of the fourth major title of her career.
