Samantha Stosur Beats Serena Williams For 2011 U.S. Open Women’s Championship

Ninth-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur broke powerful Serena Williams’ serve twice in each set, defeating heavily favored Serena Williams at the U.S. Open 6-2, 6-3.

It’s the first Grand Slam victory for Stosur, the No. 10 player in the world, who overcame a Serena Williams who was frustrated by her own play and the chair umpire.

While falling behind, Williams hit a ball to force Stosur on the move. While the ball was traveling, she yelled out “Come on!” While Stosur didn’t reach the ball, the play was still happening so Serena was cited for a code violation, and Stosur was awarded the point.

She was, shall we say, unhappy about that decision. Some of the highlights of her rant, via @bruce_arthur:

"You're a hater, and you're just unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing? And I NEVER complain."

...

"If you're ever walking down the hallway with me, you better walk the other way."

...

"I get a code violation for this? I express who I am. We're in AMERICA, last I checked."

After the match she didn’t shake the Greek umpire’s hand, a huge insult in the tennis community, and we can expect more scrutiny about her behavior, especially considering how her last U.S. Open ended. Her family joined in on the classlessness, and the whole ordeal has overshadowed a phenomenal performance. J.A. Adande said it best:
