Second-ranked Vera Zvonareva of Russia moved on to the fourth round of the 2011U.S. Open, defeating Anabel Medina Garriques in straight sets. Zvonareva was effective with her serve, with six aces to Garriques’ two, helping to overcome 35 unforced errors. She will face the winner in the later match between Irina Falconi and Sabine Liscki.

Monica Niculescu of Romania pulled off a shocker earlier in the day, dispatching 27th-ranked Lucie Safarova in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-1, to move on to the fourth round of the 2011 U.S. Open. Niculescu was downright dominant in the match, breaking Safarova’s serve five times in eight chances. Safarova had 43 unforced errors to just four for Niculescu.
In men’s tennis, 18th-ranked Juan Martin Del Potro advanced over Diego Junquiera in an all-Argentinian match. Del Potro wasn’t tested until late in the straight sets victory, 6-2, 6-1, 7-5. He had nine aces to none for Junquiera. Del Potro will face the winner between Guillermo Garcia-Lope and Gilles Simon in the third round.
