American Donald Young Upsets Stanislas Wawrinka In 2011 U.S. Open

Down a break at 1-4 in the fifth set, it was not looking good for American Donald Young in the second round of the 2011 U.S. Open. But Young eventually got a couple breaks and after failing to serve out the match, beat No. 14 seed Stansilas Wawrinka in a fifth-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) on Friday.

Young got his first break of the fifth set when he was down 4-2. In that game, he was on the right end of two player challenges. He held his serve to get back to 4-4 and then got a chance to serve out the match when he broke Wawrinka again to go up 5-4. Young looked shaky in that game and was broken, but held his serve to force the fifth-set tiebreak.

In the tiebreaker, Young picked up a mini-break on the first point and then cruised to victory. Wawrinka hit a backhand into the net on the final point.

Neither player was really on the top of their game. Young did not have a single ace, and has not hit an ace through his first two matches of the U.S. Open. He also had 68 unforced errors and nine-double faults. But he was able to convert 8 of 15 break-point chances and came up big when he needed to.

He will now play No. 24 seed Juan Ignacio Chela in the third round. This equals Young’s best performance in a Grand Slam. His best U.S. Open performance was in 2007 when he also reached the third round.
