First it was the World No. 100 singles player Venus Williams’ announcement withdrawing from the Australian Open, a tournament she won in 2003, due to a closely watched recuperation.

Now, it’s the World No. 10 singles player Andrea Petkovic who withdrew from Down Under due to a back injury.

The German singles player dropped a straight-set loss to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the second round of the Sydney International on Tuesday. She had a scan following the loss that showed she has a stress fracture in her lower back.

Petkovic was advised that her recovery from the injury could last between six to eight weeks. She is planning to undergo more tests today back in Germany.

From the AFP:

“I’ve been having some back problems for the last three or four months,” Petkovic said in a WTA statement.

”I’ve been struggling with it, but I’ve always believed it was going to be fine and so I pushed through the pain.

”The last two weeks in Australia I’ve been having bigger problems and I could only play for 30-45 minutes without pain.
