Australian Open 2012: Andy Murray Working With Former World No. 1 Ivan Lendl

Andy Murray fell to Novak Djokovic in the finals of last year’s Australian Open, dropping straight sets in the loss. This year, he’s hoping that the coaching of a former world No. 1 will help him get over the final hump. Ivan Lendl was 24 when he beat former rival John McEnroe in the 1984 French Open for his first ever Grand Slam title. McEnroe believes Lendl should give Murray, who is also 24 and looking for his first major title, a big boost in the tournament.

“It pains me to say this but I think it will work out,” McEnroe said. “When I first heard about it, it sounded desperate. But on reflection I was wrong. I think it will be interesting and it could work out really well. He brings credibility - he has won eight Grand Slam titles. He is a hard worker and is always very well prepared. He could definitely bring something to his game.”

Murray took on Lendl as his coach at the very end of last year. Murray won the 2012 Brisbane Open in the pairings’ first tournament together.
