Australian Open 2012: Roger Federer Eases Past Bernard Tomic In Straight Sets

Roger Federer held serve with Bernard Tomic for the first eight games of their match on Sunday. After winning break point in the ninth the Swiss superstar would never look back, however, going on to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory to advance to the quarterfinals at the 2012 Australian Open.

Federer hit 13 aces on the night, compared to none for Tomic. He also showed plenty of technical prowess with 45 winners to just 13 for the youngster. Federer has now won 122 consecutive matches against opponents ranked outside of the Top 20 in the world.

Rafael Nadal won his match over Felciano Lopez, putting the world’s No. 2 and No. 3-ranked men’s tennis players just one game away from meeting in the semifinals. Federer will face Juan Martin del Potro, a straight set winner over Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the next round while Nadal will have to fend off No. 7 Thomas Berdych to advance.

Tomic, meanwhile, will head home still carrying the weight of Australia future tennis hopes. He became the youngest player to reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open since Nadal did it at age 18 during the 2005 tournament.
