Andy Murray Expected To Pull Out Of Britian’s Davis Cup

As if Andy Murray wasn’t causing British tennis fans enough headaches (another Slam that left him trophy-less), he’s about to make their pain a whole lot worse.

Murray is rumored to announce this week that he will not be playing against Slovakia in Glasgow. Murray will rest a minor back injury after the Australian Open and his semifinal exit to eventual tournament champion Novak Djokovic.

Murray’s Davis Cup participation is likely to decline since this is an Olympic year. From The Daily Mail:

“I had a couple of niggling problems through the Open,” Murray said. “That’s not unusual but it will be good to take a break given the long year ahead with the other Slams and the Olympics being played at Wimbledon this year.”

The 24-year-old Scot’s next move would be to train with new coach Ivan Lendl in Florida before the tournament in Dubai in late February, but those moves are currently unclear.

Murray is not the first tennis player to pull out of his country’s Davis Cup. American Andy Roddick pulled from the U.S.‘s Davis Cup team after he withdrew from the Australian Open due to an injury.
