Chennai Open 2012: Xavier Malisse, Oliver Rochus Bounced From Opening Round

It was a day of upsets in Chennai, India.

Both No. 7 seed Xavier Malisse and No. 8 seed Oliver Rochus were bounced from the opening round of the Chennai Open on Tuesday.

Malisse was ousted by his countryman, wildcard David Goffin, in three sets. The final score was 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Goffin won in one hour and 53 minutes. He is set to play Germany’s Andreas Beck, who beat Vasek Pospisil in his opening match in straight sets.

From the AP:

“He was sick I think ... (with a) stomach ailment. He was tired,” Goffin said. “He is never easy to play, even if he is sick he can hit the ball very hard.”

Rochus was beat in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 by qualifier Yuichi Sugita of Japan.

Also from the AP:

“It was one of the best matches I’ve played,” 235th-ranked Sugita said of his victory over Rochus. “This is one of the highest-ranked players I’ve beaten.”

American Sam Querrey was also dropped from the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat by Victor Hanescu. Hanescu will face fourth-seeded Milos Raonic in the second round while Eduard Roger Vasselin, who won his opening match in straight sets, will face defending tournament champion Stanislas Wawrinka.
