Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki finally lost her position atop the WTA tour after losing in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Wozniacki fell to No. 4 in the rankings. With the loss of her position came the loss of her trainer. Wozniacki fired Ricardo Sanchez on Tuesday according to Danish media. Sanchez was just two months into the job. From Xinhuanet.com:

“Caroline does not believe she got fresh impetus out of it,” said Piotr Wozniacki, the tennis star’s father and former coach, referring to Caroline Wozniacki’s professional relation with Sanchez. “At the same time, Ricardo found it difficult to be a part of the cooperation that Caroline and I have had for many years. He would rather have worked (with Caroline Wozniacki) by himself.”

Prior to Sanchez, Wozniacki was under the guidance of her father. It is unknown whether her father return as her coach.

Apparently Sanchez was told of his dismissal after Wozniacki’s Aussie Open loss to Kim Clijsters, according to reports. Wozniacki was already the world No. 1 when Sanchez took over as her coach, however a Grand Slam still alluded her.

With one major down in 2012, the 21-year-old Dane is still without a Grand Slam to her name.
