Reigning champion Spain showed up again in 2012 Davis Cup play. The Spaniards were out to an early 2-0 leadwith a pair of opening round singles victories Friday. Spain is playing Kazakhstan.

Juan Carlos Ferrero gave Spain it’s first step in its hopeful return to glory with a four hour and 28 minute five-set match against Mikhail Kukushkin. The final score was 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4. Nicolas Almagro took four sets to defeat his Kazakhstan opponent, Andrey Golubev, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Spaniards look to clinch the third point in Saturday doubles play, where Marcel Granollers and Marc Loprez will play the Kazakhstaini pair, Evgeny Korolev and Yuri Schukin.
Serbia and Argentina also grabbed 2-0 leads in Davis Cup play on Friday. Argentina got out to an early 2-0 lead with the help of David Nalbandian who defeated Florian Mayer of Germany 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Serbia is playing without their country’s best player, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. However, world No. 19 Janko Tipsarevic sailed through his opening-round match in three sets with 11 aces.
Spain has won five of the last 12 Davis Cups, however the U.S. holds the most Davis Cup titles.
