She had rolled her left ankle after going for an open forehand.
Less than a month later, Clijsters announced that the ankle injury has forced her to pull out of next month’s BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in California. The March tournament draws the top players in the world. It would have been Clijsters’ third tournament of 2012.
Earlier this year, Clijsters announced that this will be her last season on the WTA Tour. The Belgian, a four-time Grand Slam champion, will be playing in the 2012 London Olympics.
As for Indian Wells, she won the tournament in 2003 and returned from an injury in 2005 to win it a second time. Clijsters announced this week that a comeback won’t be in the cards for this year’s event.

“I’m very disappointed,” Clijsters said in a statement. “I have great memories of Indian Wells and have always enjoyed the fan support there.”
Reuters put it best when they wrote:
“The 28-year-old, whose world ranking has slipped to 30th, has already retired once, married, become a mother and notched up 41 tour wins.”
All that’s left is an Olympic medal, Kimmy.
