Sony Ericsson Open 2012 Day 5 Results: Victoria Azarenka’s Streak Continues, Andy Murray Wins Opener

Victoria Azarenka’s win streak continued, but she doesn’t really care.

She knows she won Friday. The world No. 1 WTA player beat Michaella Krajicek, 6-3, 7-5.

But what is this? Win No. 22? No. 23?

From the AP:

“I’m not really thinking about numbers, the streaks, whatever,” Azarenka said. “It’s your job to count; mine is to play tennis.”

For those counting, it’s No. 24. Her streak is the best since 1997 when Martina Hingis went 37-0.

The victory took her one hour and 42 minutes.

Several seeds were knocked from the tournament today. Ninth-seed Vera Zvonareva was upset by wild card Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain, 6-4, 6-3. However, No. 15 seed Ana Ivanovic held on to a tight match against American Vania King, 6-4, 7-5.

On the men’s side Andy Murray won his opening round match when he defeated Alejandro Falla, 6-2. 6-3.

The No. 4 seed is now 15-3 in 2012. A champion of the Key Biscayne tournament in 2009, Murray has returned from an early defeat at Indian Wells two weeks ago. Unlike last year, he didn’t repeat losing his first-round match at both Indian Wells and Key Biscayne.

No. 10-seed and American John Isner also advanced, but he took a bit of a longer route. Isner had a slow start and dropped the first set before fighting to a three-set victory, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

No. 6-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic, No. 13 Gilles Simon, No. 18 Alexandr Dolgopolov and No. 22 Jurgen Melzer all advanced in the ATP action.
