Sony Ericsson Open 2012: Serena Williams Advances, David Ferrer Takes Out Bernard Tomic

Serena Williams continues to roll at the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open, defeating No. 21 Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the fourth round of the tournament. Williams is coming off two months rest due to a left ankle injury. Vinci is the highest-ranked opponent Williams has defeated this year.

Williams dominated on the serve, firing eight aces at her Italian opponent. She showed great patience on the return as well, winning 50 percent of her first and 72 percent of her second returns. Through two matches, Williams has yet to drop a set.

On the men’s side, No. 5 David Ferrer defeated Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4 to move on to the Round of 32. Ferrer looked much more comfortable on his serve, converting 63 percent of his first serves, and 56 percent of his second serves into points.
