2012 Sony Ericsson Open Results Day 7: John Isner Gone From Key Biscayne

If he had won, John Isner would likely have been the top American in the world.

He would have likely pushed aside world No. 8 Mardy Fish. But the world No. 10 just couldn’t get past No. 19 seed Florian Mayer.

A lethargic-like Isner, who had a bye the opening round and then topped Nikolay Davydenko in three sets, lost to the German in the third round of the Sony Ericsson, 6-4, 6-2. The first set took just around 40 minutes. The second set took about 26 minutes.

Just last week, Isner defeated world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. A week later, he dropped a match in straight sets to the world No. 19.

This was the first meeting between the two opponents. Mayer won 88 percent of his first service points while Isner won only 65 percent of his. He also was broken three times.

Mayer will meet No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round.
