In a rematch of the 2011 U.S. Open final, Serena Williams prevailed at the Sony Ericsson Open.
Sony Ericsson Open 2012 Day 8: Serena Williams’ Serve Is Back, Maria Sharapova Advances
Williams advanced to the quarterfinal round after she beat Australia’s Sam Stosur 7-5, 6-3. Stosur saved two match points down 2-5 in the second and forced Williams to serve for the match. Down Love-40, Williams came back and won her service game to win the match.
Older sister Venus also won her last match when she won in three sets on Day 7.
As for the younger Williams, she was propelled into the next round with 20 aces. Williams will face the winner of No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki and No. 23 Yanina Wickmayer.
The furthest Williams has reached in the 2012 is the quarterfinal round at Brisbane. She withdrew prior to that match due to an ankle injury. (Williams made the fourth round at the Australian Open and then didn’t play at all in February.)
The first to reach the quarterfinals was World No. 2 Maria Sharapova. She had her fair share of trouble on the court against countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova. In two hours and 13 minutes, Sharapova won 6-4, 7-6 (3).
On the men’s side of the tournament American and world No. 8 Mardy Fish advanced, a day after American and world No. 10 John Isner was defeated by world No. 19 Florian Mayer. Fish beat Kevin Anderson of Russia, 6-4, 6-3.
