Sony Ericsson Open 2012: Mardy Fish Advances To Quarters

American Mardy Fish advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday with a fourth-round win over Nicolas Almagro. Fish defeated the Spaniard, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, to move on and potentially face fellow American Andy Roddick.

Fish joins Rafael Nadal and Janko Tipsarevic, who also reached the quarters on Tuesday. Nadal defeated Kei Nishikori, 6-4, 6-4, in a match in which he won five straight games to advance in convincing fashion. Rafa has been a runner-up twice at the Sony Ericsson, but is still looking for his first title in the event. Tipsarevic took care of Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova quickly advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Li Na. The match took less than 70 minutes as Sharapova broke the defending French Open champion seven times. She will face either Serena Williams or Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals.
