Rafael Nadal, the world’s No. 2 player, resigned Tuesday from his position as the vice president of the ATP Players Council. He felt he couldn’t give the position what it deserved. World No. 3 Roger Federer is still serving as the Council’s president.

Nadal and Federer were the faces of the campaign to decrease the tournament schedule to give players more time to have an off-season. They argued for stronger voices of the players and an extra day to be added to the U.S. Open.
They didn’t always agree on their arguments either. Nadal wanted a two-year ranking system. It’s a proposal that Federer opposed.

“I don’t have enough energy,” Nadal said Tuesday. “I cannot still put in my 100 percent there.”
Nadal announced his decision after his fourth-round victory at the Sony Ericsson Open. Federer was knocked from the same tournament on Monday. He has yet to release any comments.
“I am not frustrated,” he said. But he added, “I believe that we can do much more things than what we have done. ... My feeling is a great opportunity to improve the sport, because today the players are very unified.”
