The 2012 season has seen Kim Clijsters retire from matches more than it’s seen her play.

In January, Clijsters withdrew from Brisbane with a left hip injury. In February, she didn’t play. In March, she withdrew from Indian Wells with a left ankle injury.

Now, she’s out for the next four weeks due to a hip injury.

The torn muscle in Clijsters’s hip will put her out the entire month of April. She will return to action in Madrid for May 5, meaning she should be ready to play for the French Open.

Clijsters said at the beginning of the year that she is planning to retire after the summer, when she hopes to play for her country in the Olympics. Clijsters is currently ranked No. 36 in the world.

The Belgian mother played in the recent Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. She lost in straight sets to countrywoman Yanina Wickmayer. Her management company released a statement on Wednesday that said she had hip pain throughout the tournament.

From the AP:

Tests “have shown the presence of a small torn muscle” in her right hip, the statement said.
