On March 28, 2012, Belgian tennis player and former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters announced that she would be out for four weeks due to a hip injury. Clijsters wanted the torn muscle in her hip to rest and heal in time for the French Open. That also meant she wouldn’t be participating in her country’s Fed Cup match.
Kim Clijsters Won’t Compete In Belgium’s Fed Cup Match

Today, it was confirmed by the Associated Press that Clijsters wouldn’t travel with her country to Belgium’s match against Japan. Neither will world No. 30 Yanina Wickmayer. Clijsters is currently ranked No. 40 in the world.
This means that the Belgian team’s highest-ranked player is Kirsten Flipkens, who is ranked No. 176 in the world.
The matches take place April 21 and 22.
Wickmayer cited focusing on the WTA Tour as her reason for not competing for her country. With the constant tournament schedule, it’s common to see the world’s top players not compete for their countries.
Clijsters plans to return to on May 5, which is the start of the Madrid Open. This return will give her some time on clay before she hits the red dirt at Roland Garros.
