There were only three matches in the first day of play at the Monte Carlo Masters, the season’s first clay court competition, and they were over in a bare minimum of six combined sets.
Monte Carlo Masters 2012 Results: Gilles Simon, Victor Troicki, Ivan Dodig Advance
The only ranked player to take the court was Frenchman Gilles Simon, the No. 9 seed in the tournament (and therefore the highest ranked player not to earn a bye to the second round).
He handled Wild Card qualifier Benjamin Balleret 6-3 6-2, while Victor Troicki beat another Wild Card entry in Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-3 6-1.
If you’re wondering why Balleret and Lisnard, the No. 352 and No. 393 players in the world respectively, earned wild card entries, it’s probably by virtue of the fact that they are both native Monegasques (the fancy word for people from Monaco, deal with it).
They will now fade into oblivion until the next Grand Prix, James Bond movie, and/or episode of Archer. Elsewhere, Ivan Dodig won a battle of Ivans over fellow Croat Ivan Ljubicic, winning 6-0 6-3.
