The French Open is 10 days away. That might not be a good countdown for Victoria Azarenka.
Italian Open 2012 Scores: Victoria Azarenka Withdraws From Rome
The world No. 1 withdrew from her current tournament in Rome with an injury. Azarenka had an easy second-round victory where she only dropped three games to Shahar Peer of Israel. The WTA announced shortly after that Azarenka would not face the tournament’s No. 14 seed, Dominika Cibulkova, in the third round. Azarenka left the tournament with a right shoulder injury.
From Reuters:
“Her withdrawal was a surprise to everyone in the Foro Italico as she had shown no sign of a problem in brushing aside Peer.”
The Belarussian already won one major this year in Australia. She also won three other titles. Her last loss came to Serena Williams on Sunday in the finals of the Madrid Open.
The Italian Open is the last major tournament before the start of Roland Garros, which begins on May 27.
