Then There Were 3: Sloane Stephens Is The Youngest American To Reach Fourth Round

With Serena and Venus Williams out in the opening two rounds of the French Open, there didn’t look to be much hope for the American women. In the fourth round, there are three Americans remaining.

Got a pen? Write this name down: Sloane Stephens. Check out her WTA page, where she’s currently ranked No. 70 in the world. Check out her growing bank account -- with three wins at the French Open, she’s earned $100,000. And maybe check out her social media skills, where she says she “plays tennis in her spare time.“

Sloane Stephens is the only one of eight teenagers remaining in this year’s draw at Roland Garros. That’s right, she’s a teenager. Stephens is only 19. The teenager defeated France’s Mathilde Johansson 6-3, 6-2 on Friday.

Next, she’ll face sixth-seeded Sam Stosur, who bagged a Slam title at the 2011 U.S. Open.

Stephens isn’t worried for the match or the spotlight. From ESPN W:

“Whatever comes, comes,” Smith said. “It doesn’t change who we are, what we believe in or how we live life. We are so excited, blessed right now. So blessed. Sloane has been working very hard for this; this is what she wants. She understands it’s not going to be easy, and you have to constantly keep working harder to reach your goals. And when you have success, you have to work even harder to keep it going.”

The other two Americans in the tournament are world No. 63 Varvara Lepchenko and world No. 36 Christina McHale.

In Australia, Lepchenko didn’t even get out of the first round while McHale made it into the third round. The 20-year-old from New Jersey made her deepest run into a tournament this season in the quarterfinals of Doha.

Stephens herself had her career-best finish in a Slam at the U.S. Open, when she made it to the third round.
