Caroline Wozniacki Goes Off On Umpire, Asks ‘Have You Been To School?’

It’s not the first time this year Caroline Wozniacki hasn’t liked a call by an umpire. But it is her most quoatable.

It was one-all in the second set of Wozniacki’s third round French Open match with Kaia Kanepi. During a rally, Kanepi hits Wozniacki a backhand, which the Dane believes to be out. She immediately calls for the chair umpire, Poncho Ayala, to come down and look at the mark. She even circles the mark with her racket. Ayala goes and looks at the mark. He thinks it caught the line. The call stands as in.

Where’s Hawk-Eye in this situation? It isn’t used in on clay courts because it’s unreliable (you know, the kicking up and easily sliding of dust and all). That’s when Woz went off.

Here’s her rant to the umpire from SI.com:

“The ball is clearly out,” she ranted at Ayala. “You cannot just sit there and be so arrogant. How can you see this ball as in when the ball is like this out? It’s not touching the line. If we had Hawk-Eye you’d be so frickin’ embarrassed right now. So embarrassed. Especially because you can see the mark. Have you been to school? Can I ask you? Have you gone to school?”

Is anybody wondering if maybe Wozniacki and Serena Williams went to the same “How To Blast The Umpire” academy? Clearly, Woz picked up a thing or two from last year’s U.S. Open. But really, what tennis player would teach at that academy? (I’m looking at you, Mr. McEnroe and Mr. Roddick.)

Well, Wozniacki lost in three, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.

But the lesson learned here is nobody puts Woz in a corner. Nobody.
