Victoria Azarenka Takes Mental Break Before Wimbledon

After losing early at the 2012 French Open, women’s No. 1 Victoria Azarenka won’t play again until Wimbledon.

World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka was surprised with an early-round defeat by world No. 16 Dominika Cibulkova on Sunday at the French Open. Now, Azarenka announced she will take a break from tennis to be mentally prepared for Wimbledon. It’ll be a short break with the tournament beginning in 21 days. Although in tennis time, that’s almost as much as their entire offseason.

Azarenka began the year on a 26-match win streak. Writers were calling her the female Djokovic. Since Marion Bartoli snapped that streak in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open, Azarenka hasn’t won a tournament. She has finished as the runner-up in two tournaments (Stuttgart and Madrid).

From the BBC:

“There has been a lot of tennis for me in the last five months,” she said. “I need just to get rested mentally, definitely. Once I have my passion and desire back on the court, I’ll be on the grass. ... I don’t know how to describe my performance really. It wasn’t satisfying at all. But I guess it happens. I don’t know even what to find positive in my performance.”
