French Open Results: Defending Champion Li Na Knocked Out By Qualifier

A not-so-well-known player from Kazakhstan knocked out an oh-so-well-known Grand Slam defending champion Monday.

Yaroslava Shvedova eliminated 2011 French Open champion Li Na. Shvedova is ranked No. 142 in the world. She is a qualifier in this year’s Roland Garros.

The defending champion came into the tournament as the No. 6 seed. On Monday, she took the opening set, but was only able to win two of the next fourteen games. Li Na was knocked from the fourth round of play in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Want to play a little by the numbers?

41 - unforced errors by Li Na

2 - Grand Slam doubles titles won by Shvedova

0 - Grand Slam singles titles won by Shvedova

4 - the number of rounds Li Na has made it to in every Grand Slam since she raised the Suzanne Lenglen Cup in 2011.

From Yahoo! UK:

"Nothing happened," Li Na told reporters. "I just tried to play ball back into the court, but I couldn't. ... Right now, I want totally relax the mind and body. I think I didn't play bad in the claycourt season. I need some time to recover. I'm not machine."
