The 2012 U.S. Open -- the final Grand Slam event of the year -- is fast approaching. An assortment of top men’s tennis talent is participating in the BB&T Atlanta Open this week and the first round got under way on Monday.
BB&T Atlanta Open 2012: Nicolas Mahut, Steve Johnson Advance
The singles matches played on Monday included 19-year-old U.S. player Jack Sock defeating No. 7 Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Gilles Muller defeated Marinko Matosevic in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4. South African player and No. 5 Kevin Anderson eliminated Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
In an all-U.S. matchup later in the evening, Steve Johnson defeated Donald Young in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round.
In the day’s final matches, Russia’s Igor Kunitsyn knocked off Brian Baker of the U.S. in three sets, 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 and Nicolas Mahut was able to overcome Paul Capdeville in three sets to advance, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
