Serena Williams Advances To Wimbledon’s Semifinals With Win Over Petra Kvitova

Serena Williams has had much better luck than sister Venus at Wimbledon this year, but most pundits assumed that that luck would end when she met up with Petra Kvitova on Tuesday. It didn’t, though, allowing Serena to advance to the semifinals at the All England Club.

Williams was able to pick up the quarterfinals victory in straight sets, ousting Kvitova 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals. It’s obviously a great win for Williams considering she was able to eliminate the reigning champion from the Czech Republic.

SB Nation’s own Bill Connelly predicted there was a chance of this happening, but didn’t expect it to come in straight sets:

If the game comes down to guile and clutch play, one has to figure the odds are in Williams’ favor. She’s been around the block, winning 13 slam titles and reaching four other finals. With the match on the line against Yaroslava Shvedova in the fourth round, she unleashed three straight gutsy, perfect winners to lock down the match. But her feet can’t quite move as quickly as she wants them to, and her service return has been spotty.

Williams now awaits the winner of the match between 2-seeded Victoria Azarenka and Tamira Paszek to find out who she’ll matchup with later this week in her bid to make it to the Wimbledon finals.

If Serena’s able to make it past that opponent, it’ll be the sixth time Williams has reached Wimbledon’s championship match -- and a chance for a fifth title ... and her first chance at a major championship since her Wimbledon victory in 2010.
