Fresh off a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, Andy Murray was looking to get his hard court schedule started with a bang at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
2012 Western & Southern Open: Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych Upset
Andy Murray is toppled at the Western & Southern Open.

That hope vanished quickly Thursday as the third-seeded Murray was upset by France’s Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 to see some of the air go out of his newly reinvigorated confidence.
Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych saw a similar fate, dropping a three-set struggle to unseeded Milos Raonic of Canada, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
The hard court tournament wasn’t only upsets Thursday, as favorites Rodger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish all advanced to the quarterfinals.
On the women’s side, 2012 double gold medalist Serena Williams easily advanced to the quarterfinals, besting Poland’s Urszula Radwanska 6-4, 6-3. Her sister Venus had a similarly uneventful round of 16, topping Sara Errani 6-3, 6-0.
Federer and the Williams sisters will be in action again on Friday.
