2012 Winston-Salem Open: John Isner Advances, Andy Roddick Does Not
Fellow American Andy Roddick, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, was the only seeded player to lose Wednesday and fail to move into the quarterfinals, as he was downed by unseeded Steve Darcis, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3).
Other notable winners included top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 2 Tomas Berdych, No. 4 Alexandr Dolgopolov, No. 6 Marcel Granollers and No. 7 Sam Querrey.
While not a big-name event to casual tennis fans, the Winston-Salem Open is an important tournament for players preparing for the U.S. Open, as it’s the final hard-court tournament before tennis’ fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year.
