The night session of the 2012 U.S. Open saw a number of upsets on Tuesday, and it was capped off when women’s No. 21 Christina McHale was upended by unseeded Dutch player Kiki Bertens in a hard-fought three set battle, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

McHale’s exit wasn’t the only surprising result on the day. Men’s No. 10 Juan Monaco went down to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a lengthy five-set match that saw the underdog Garcia-Lopez come back from two sets down to win.
Caroline Wozniack, the No. 8 on the women’s side, also suffered a shocking loss. She battled through injury before losing 6-2, 6-2 to Irina-Camelia Begu.
The main court at Arthur Ashe Stadium produced no surprising results, with many of the favorites winning with ease.
Andy Roddick opened the day defeating fellow American Rhyne Williams. Venus Williams followed with a quick victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands. As darkness hit and the lights came on, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams dispatched their opponents in a short final session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The two stars combined to lose just four games in five total sets.
American and men’s No, 27, Sam Querrey, was able to get by Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu in four sets to advance to the second round.
