Victoria Azarenka vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Australian Open women’s quarterfinal preview

The defending Australian Open champion is back in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka continues the defense of her Australian Open championship as she takes on Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Australian Open.

Azarenka has been rolling through the Australian Open lately. She needed just 47 minutes to beat her last opponent, Elena Vesnina, 6-1,6-1.

Kuznetsova’s name isn’t as well known in the tennis world as of late but she did win the 2004 U.S. Open and the 2009 French Open. She entered the season ranked No. 75 after a knee injury forced her to miss a large swathe of 2012.

She defeated No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in a match that lasted almost two and a half hours to reach the quarterfinals.

The two have faced each other seven times, with Kuznetsova holding the all-time edge at 4-3. But Azarenka has had the upper hand as of late, defeating Kuznetsova in two sets in both meetings last year.

The winner of the match will go on to face either No. 3-seeded Serena Williams or No. 29 Sloane Stephens.
