French Open results 2013: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic advance, Janko Tipsarevic falls apart

Rafael Nadal didn’t drop the opening set in his third match at this years’ French Open at Roland Garros, but he still showed rare moments of weakness on clay Saturday. After losing the opening set in his first and second matches, Nadal trailed 4-2 and was down a break at 6-5 in the first set against Fabio Fognini before ultimately winning the set and the match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4.

Nadal, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career, with many coming over the past few months. Many still believe he’ll re-affirm his title as the King of Clay with a win in this year’s tournament, but the early-goings haven’t been nearly as smooth as past years.

No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic had no issues with his first seeded opponent of the tournament, as he took down Grigor Dimitrov by a score of 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Nadal and Djokovic are back on schedule now after having earlier matches delayed due to poor weather.

We saw another top 10 player exit the tournament on the men’s side, as No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic fell to No. 29 Mikhail Youzhny, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Tipsarevic was frustrated by a pair of loud fans throughout the match and eventually threw a tirade, yelling at the fans in question. The fans were eventually ejected.

The top seed in action on the WTA side, No. 2 Maria Sharapova, won her match as well. Jie Zheng took her to the wire in the second set, but Sharapova ultimately avoided extra sets in her 6-1, 7-5 victory.
