This is the first time Federer has lost in the fourth round since his 2000 exit against Alex Corretja. French Open 2014 results: Ernests Gulbis defeats Roger Federer in Round 4
The 2009 French Open winner will need to wait another year to win another title at Roland Garros.

After going down 2-5 during the fourth set, Gulbis left the court for a seven-minute medical timeout. Though he took the next two games after returning, Gulbis couldn’t complete a comeback and went to the deciding fifth set against Federer. Gulbis jumped out to an early lead, earning the first three games. Federer attempted to disrupt Gulbis by taking three games, but up 5-3 and serving for match point, Gulbis kept his composure and knocked out the four seed.
Gulbis will face Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Berdych defeated American John Isner, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, in the fourth round.
Federer is the second-highest seed in the men’s bracket to be eliminated so far. No. 3 seed and 2014 Australian Open winner Stanislas Wawrinka lost in the first round to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The top two seeds, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, still have fourth-round matches to play. Djokovic plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga later on Sunday while Nadal is scheduled to face Dusan Lajovic on Monday.
