Fourth-seeded Roger Federer was upset by 18th-ranked Ernests Gulbis in Round 4 of the French Open on Sunday in the biggest development of the weekend at Roland Garros.

Federer failed to get into the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the first time in a decade.


Gulbis, who took advantage of a seven-minute medical time out during the fourth set against Federer, is in the quarterfinals of the tournament for the second time. He will face sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych, the winner of a Round 4 match against American John Isner.
Federer has now failed to get into the quarterfinals in three of his last four major appearances. He had previously reached nine consecutive quarterfinals at the French Open, last losing before that point in 2004, when he dropped a third-round match to Gustavo Kuerten in three sets.
Gulbis joins Berdych, Milos Raonic and second-seeded Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Djokovic dispatched of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1, in the match after Federer’s loss on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Elsehwere in Men’s Singles action, Andy Murray and Fernando Verdasco emerged victorious from their Round 3 matches, which were suspended due to darkness on Saturday. Those two will face each other on Monday with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Rafael Nadal will also be in action on Monday, going against unranked Dusan Lajovic.
Eighth-ranked Maria Sharapova was one of four players in the women’s bracket to advance on Sunday. She defeated Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, and will face Garbiñe Muguruza in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Carla Suarez Navarro and Canadian Eugenie Bouchard also moved past Round 4. Fourth-ranked Simona Halep, the highest remaining seed, will try to advance on Monday when she takes on 15th-seeded American Sloane Stephens.
