The women’s Wimbledon Championships final is now set following Thursday’s victories by Petra Kvitova and Eugenie Bourchard. Kvitova won 7-6(6), 6-1 to start the day and Bouchard followed with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory.

This year’s women’s title match will feature the first Canadian to appear in a Grand Slam singles final.

Kvitova, the No. 6 seed, had a tough first set against fellow Czech Lucie Safarova, needing 51 minutes to take the match lead. She cruised to victory with a 6-1 second set win. After losing in the quarterfinals at the last two Wimbledon tournaments, Kvitova is back in the finals for the first time since winning it all in 2011. She beat Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 that year to take her first and so far only Grand Slam championship.
Bouchard, the No. 13 seed, faced a challenging first set in her match against Simona Halep, the No. 3 seed, ultimately prevailing 7-6(5). Halep appeared to hurt her left ankle early during the first set and needed to call for the trainer. Bouchard easily took the second set 6-2 to reach the final against Kvitova. Bouchard, 20, is making her first Grand Slam finals appearance and becomes the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam singles final.
