Novak Djokovic wins 2nd Wimbledon title with 5-set victory over Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic has defeated Roger Federer 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 to claim the 2014 Wimbledon title. Djokovic now has seven Grand Slam singles titles and his second Wimbledon championship, previously winning in 2011.

Djokovic opened the first set by taking the first point, but he and Federer exchanged games until the tiebreak. After winning the first three points, Federer dealt with Djokovic’s comeback before an ace and Djokovic sending the ball into the net ended the first set 7-6(7).

During the second set, Djokovic fell to the ground (video) and appeared to be favoring his left leg at times before the trainer examined him after winning his second point. He appeared to be fine for the rest of the set. While he was unable to make quick work of Federer in the second, Djokovic ultimately leveled the match with a 6-4 set victory.

The third set was another back-and-forth affair that included a perfect game of aces for Federer, who took a 5-4 lead with that, but ended in a tiebreak that Djokovic won 7-6(4).

Djokovic jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set, only to see Federer swing the momentum his way by winning the next five games and the set.

The deciding fifth set saw neither player give ground until Djokovic took a 5-4 lead and played his second championship point. Federer wound up putting the ball into the net to end the match.

This was only the second Grand Slam singles title between Djokovic and Federer. The two met at the 2007 U.S. Open final, which ended with Federer winning in three sets. Djokovic has brought his career record against Federer to within one match of .500, trailing 18-17.
