It was a big first day at the 2015 Australian Open, and it featured plenty of upsets. The women’s side of the bracket got shaken up big time as high seeds were upset by their unseeded opponents, though the men’s side didn’t get the same treatment. Women’s No. 5 seed Ana Ivanovic was the first to fall, losing to Lucie Hradecka, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
2015 Australian Open results and bracket: Top-seeded Ana Ivanovic, Angelique Kerber fall on Day 1
Ana Ivanovic and Angelique Kerber were two of the eight seeded women to lose on the first day of the Australian Open.

Hradecka dominated the second and third sets, and only lost the first set due to her own struggles, not strong play from Ivanovic. Hradecka only landed 40 percent of her opening set first serves, but cleaned up her play nicely in the second and third frames. Another top 10 woman fell on the day, as Angelique Kerber, the tournament’s No. 9 seed, lost to Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.
Other seeded women who fell on the first day include No. 28 Sabine Lisicki, No. 32 Belinda Bencic, No. 27 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 16 Lucie Safarova, No. 23 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and No. 27 Carla Suarez Navarro. That’s eight seeded women out on the first day.
The highest seeded man to fall was No. 11 Ernests Gulbis, who fell to Thanasi Kokkinakis, 7-5, 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 8-6. Tommy Robredo, the No. 15 seed, retired after just five games due to injury, sending Edouard Roger-Vasselin to the next round. Other top seeds like Simona Halep and Mario Sharapova for the women, and Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray for the men, advanced without issues.
