The Australian Open will come to a close with the men’s singles final on Sunday, when top seed Novak Djokovic takes on the sixth-seeded Andy Murray for the third time in five years in Melbourne. This may be a familiar matchup in a familiar setting, but seeing two of the so-called “big four” clash is always worth watching.

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will face off in their third Australian Open final on Sunday.

Both guys have gone through the best of the best to make it this far, though neither faced off against either Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer in the tournament. Federer went out in the third round to unseeded opponent Andreas Seppi, and Nadal fell to seventh seed Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.
Berdych was Murray’s semifinal opponent, but didn’t put up much of a fight after the first set. Murray lost that first set in a tiebreak, but dominated sets two and three before sealing the deal with a 7-5 fourth set. Djokovic had a much tougher time getting through Stan Wawrinka, the fourth seed, going all the way to five sets. Djokovic didn’t look really dominant in that one until the final set, winning 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Djokovic has never lost in the finals at Melbourne Park. He took his first Grand Slam in Melbourne in 2008 and won it three straight years from 2011 through 2013, before he fell to the aforementioned Wawrinka in the quarterfinals in 2014. This also means the two finals he’s played against Murray went in his favor.
Women's Final
Folks shouldn’t worry about Djokovic being pushed to five sets by Wawrinka. It’s not a sign that he’s slumping or anything like that. It’s the fourth consecutive Grand Slam match between the two that went the distance.
Djokovic and Murray have a long history. The first time the two played was when they were 12. They’ve played 23 times professionally, with Djokovic winning 15 of those matchups. However, they’re tied at 2-2 in major finals matches, including Djokovic’s two wins in the Australian Open finals.
On top of that, Djokovic has won four consecutive matches over Murray, three of which came in straight sets. Murray has looked great so far in this tournament though. He’s serving well and is dictating the pace in his matchups. He’s dropped just two sets thus far in the tournament, including the opening set to Berdych in the semifinals.
The matchup is set for Sunday at 3 a.m. ET, and it will be broadcast on ESPN. Those hoping to watch online can do so at WatchESPN and at the Australian Open website.
