Nick Kyrgios caught saying a player ‘banged your girlfriend’ during Wawrinka match

Okay then.

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

One of the strangest tennis moments you’ll ever see occurred on Wednesday during the match between Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka at the 2015 Rogers Cup in Montreal. Kyrgios has been known to speak his mind on the court and some might even say he takes things a little too far. If that wasn’t the case before Wednesday, it probably is now after this.

While the audio isn’t perfect, it’s pretty clear Kyrgios starts “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend” apparently referring to Thanasi Kokkinakis. Judging from video from Sports Net, it sounds like the second part of the comment was “sorry to tell you that, mate.”

As for why he said it, well Kyrgios said, “I don’t really know, I just said it.” He said Wawrinka had gotten “lippy” during the match and the comment was just in the heat of the moment.

Whether or not Wawrinka heard the comment isn’t entirely clear. Kyrgios’ comment came at the start of the second set and the match continued on into the third set before Wawrinka retired from the match, saying he was ailing. After the match, there didn’t appear to be any animosity between the two, or Wawrinka hid it well.

There are few unknowns and it was a strange comment to make, but one thing for sure, Kevin Garnett approves of the tactic (allegedly).

Later Wednesday night, Wawrinka responded via Twitter:

UPDATE ****

After Nick Kyrgios’ appalling comments about Stan Warinka’s girlfriend, he was just been booed as he took to the court in Canada.
