Australian Open 2016: Schedule, TV coverage and live stream for Monday

Both Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams will be in action for the first day of the Australian Open.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The opening round of the 2016 Australian Open is here, and both top seeds will be in action. No. 1 Novak Djokovic drew unseeded Hyeon Chung in his first match, while Serena Williams will take on unseeded Camila Giorgi on the women’s side.

Djokovic is considered the favorite to win the tournament after a ridiculously dominant run last season. He won three of the four Grand Slams, only falling short in the finals of the French Open, the one Grand Slam he has still yet to win in his career. He is the defending Australian Open champion, as is Williams on the women’s side.

There is still a “big four” on the men’s side, but Djokovic has clearly been a step above Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal. Stan Wawrinka is also in that discussion these days. Federer will be in action against Nikoloz Basilashvili, and he’s been drawn in the same half as Djokovic.

Australian Nick Kyrgios, the No. 29 seed, will be in action against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta. No. 7 seed Kei Nishikori vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber could be the most intriguing opening round match and that will also be on the first day.

Television coverage of the opening round begins at 7 p.m. ET Sunday evening, running on ESPN 2. That coverage will run through 7 a.m. Monday morning. From there, ESPN 2 and the Tennis Channel will share coverage throughout the tournament. Live streaming of the full tournament will be available at Watch ESPN and Tennis Channel Live.
