The first day of the 2016 Australian Open is in the book, and most of the top seeds have advanced without issue. No. 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams made it through their first-round opponents in straight sets, though Williams did face some resistance from Italy’s Camila Giorgi. Williams won her match, 6-4, 7-5, while Djokovic beat Hyeon Chung, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, the two biggest names outside of the top seeds, also made it through to the second round unscathed. The stage is set for yet another match between Djokovic and Federer as they were drawn in the first half of this year’s tournament.

Other top men and women who found themselves winning on Day 1 include Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Tomas Berdych and Agnieszka Radwanska. There were multiple upsets on the first day, though, most in the women’s side of the bracket. No. 16 Caroline Wozniacki, a former world No. 1, dominated the first set against Yulia Putintseva, but dropped the next two, losing 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. American Sloane Stephens fell to wild card Wang Qiang, and Samantha Stosur fell to another qualifier in Kristyna Pliskova.

On the men’s side, No. 17 seed Benoit Paire lost his match against American Noah Rubin, the world No. 328 player coming into the tournament. Australian Nick Kyrgios won his match, as well. Below, you can find the results from pertinent seeded matches, with a full list of results here.
