2016 Australian Open results and bracket: Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic advance; Petra Kvitova upset

Williams and Djokovic are in to the third round, but No. 6 seed Petra Kvitova fell to unseeded Daria Gavrilova in the second round of the Australian Open.

Unlike the second day of the tournament, Day 3 of the 2016 Australian Open was absent the huge upsets that saw Rafael Nadal, Simona Halep and Venus Williams eliminated in the first round. There was one significant upset as women’s sixth seed Petra Kvitova had nothing for Australian and unseeded opponent Daria Gavrilova. It was a straight set win for Gavrilova, 6-4, 6-4.

But top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were both on the winning side of their matches and both moved on to the third round of play. Djokovic was pushed a competitive final frame against Quentin Halys, but he ultimately won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(3). Williams had no issues making it past Su-Wei Hsieh, winning in straight sets as well, 6-1, 6-2.

A clash between Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer is still in the cards as Federer easily made his way through Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. That meeting is going to be the most anticipated match of the tournament and the two are playing well enough that there certainly is no loss in sight before they meet.

Though if Federer is going to drop one before facing Djokovic, some would suggest it could be when he matches up with No. 27 seed Grigor Dimitrov, who he will now face in the third round. Dimitrov was pushed to four sets against Marco Trungelliti in his match in the second round, but made it through, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

In the men’s bracket, every single seeded player won their match on Day 3. That includes guys like Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The other seeded woman to fall was No. 23 Svetlana Kuznetsova, who fell to Kateryna Bondarenko, 6-1, 7-5. Other high-ranking women to win on Day 3 include Agnieszka Radwanska, Maria Sharapova and Carla Suarez Navarro.
