The second round of play at the 2016 Australian Open is over, and the top players in the second half of the draw for both brackets made it through to the third round with relative ease. Men’s No. 2 seed Andy Murray quickly dispatched unseeded Australian Sam Groth, 6-0, 6-4, 6-1 in his match while women’s No. 3 seed Garbine Muguruza dominated Kirsten Flipkens, 6-4, 6-2 to advance.
Australian Open 2016 results and bracket: Andy Murray, Garbine Muguruza cruise into 3rd round
Both of the top seeds playing on Wednesday night made it through to the next round with relative ease.

Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are also already set to play in the third round, so Murray and Muguruza will be their top competition.
Unfortunately for the local crowd, the end of the second round also saw the end of Lleyton Hewitt’s career. We knew going into this year’s tournament that Hewitt would be retiring after he got eliminated, and on Sunday No. 8 seed David Ferrer assisted Hewitt with a speedy exit, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
In addition to Murray and Ferrer, other top men who won and advanced to the third round include Stan Wawrinka, the tournament’s No. 4 seed and American John Isner, the tournament’s No. 10 seed. On the women’s side, Angelique Kerber, Victoria Azarenka and Madison Keys were among those victorious.
There weren’t really any significant upsets on the men’s side. Lukas Rosol took out No. 25-seeded American Jack Sock, while Andrey Juznetsov beat No. 30 seed Jeremy Chardy. For the women, No. 11 Timea Bacsinszky fell to her unseeded opponent, Annika Beck, while No. 18 Elina Svitolina and No. 19 Jelena Jankovic were also among those that lost.
